C’è poi un’altra versione raccontata dal regista Andrew Litvack secondo il quale l’attrice venne contattata dalla maison nel 1981, anno in cui venne realizzato il primo prototipo.

Quando Jane Birkin si recò da Hermès per ritirare la borsa, ne rimase entusiasta e si avviò verso l’uscita: qualcuno però le disse che stava dimenticando qualcosa e l’attrice capì, con grande imbarazzo, che volevano farle pagare la borsa. Secondo Litvack la star venne poi rimborsata e da allora gode del 10% di sconto da Hermès.

A conti fatti la prima versione sembra quella corretta, non fosse che per la fonte più che autorevole. In ogni caso la Birkin di Hermès nasce come la borsa per le donne moderne, “sorella” dell’altro modello icona della maison, la Kelly.
